Two Percent

Tamara’s small hands deftly peeled and chopped the winter vegetables, her movements quick and precise. But as she worked, the scent of frying rat-tail steaks wafted through the kitchen, and she wrinkled her nose in disgust.

Ugh. How can people eat that? she thought, shaking her head. The thought of biting into one made her stomach churn. She took a deep breath and straightened up, putting on her best customer-service smile before going back out to serve her customers.

Jay moved to a seat at the bar. Beside him, a young man nervously tapped his foot. As Tamara came out of the kitchen holding Jay’s food he held an empty pitcher up.

“Another pitcher please.” He said, but Tamara ignored him.

Tamara placed the plate with steaming food in front of Jay. “Here you are, enjoy.” She smiled, then served the top-knot guy. After receiving another pitcher of beer, he scampered off into the hallway and up the stairs.

Dungeon-meat loot, Jay thought, twirling a piece on the end of a fork. With little hesitation he scoffed down the tender rat-tail steak, surprised at how juicy the meat was, how every savory bite melted in his mouth. As he savored the flavors he wondered if all looted-meat was this delicious.

As he ate, he wondered if he made the right choice by sticking around in Losla, effectively becoming a secret adventurer, unregistered by the Guild. Perhaps it would’ve been better to stage his own death and simply flee. Losla was on the southern edge of the Kingdom, so he would only need to head south and he would be outside the borders. He wondered how well he would do on his own, alone in the wilderness.

The battles he went through were painful and punishing at first, but once he had two skeletons they were somewhat manageable. Jay knew there were other monsters out there, roaming outside the confinement of dungeons, but he didn’t know what level they may be, so if he was going to survive in the wilderness, he had to get stronger.
